Hovertravel Services Suspended Following Discovery of Suspected Ordnance in Southsea

Hovertravel services between Southsea and Ryde were suspended on Tuesday, December 3, after suspected wartime ordnance was discovered near the Southsea Common area.

Suspected WWII Bomb Found

The discovery was made around 9:30 am by construction workers involved in sea defence works. The object, believed to be a World War II bomb, prompted an immediate response from local authorities.

Police quickly cordoned off the area near Southsea Common, close to the Hovertravel terminal, and bomb disposal experts were called to assess and handle the situation.

Service Updates

Hovertravel initially announced an update would be provided at 12:45 pm regarding the resumption of services. However, as of 5:00 pm, operations remain suspended, and the next update is expected at 6:45 pm.

A spokesperson for Hovertravel said:
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our passengers. The safety of our customers and staff is our top priority, and we are working closely with authorities to monitor the situation.”

Community and Travel Disruption

The suspension of the cross-Solent operation has caused disruption for commuters and visitors traveling between Southsea and Ryde. Local businesses and residents near the cordoned area have also been advised to avoid the location until further notice.
