£42 Million Cocaine Haul Busted in Daring UK Smuggling Attempt
Three men caught red-handed trying to smuggle over half a tonne of cocaine into the UK have been convicted. Two have already been slammed with hefty prison sentences after the National Crime Agency (NCA), backed by Humberside Police and Border Force, cracked down on the operation in May 2024.
Drug Smuggling Plot Exposed
On May 4, officers swooped on Daniel Livingstone, 25, outside a hotel in Lelley, East Yorkshire. He was staying there with two cohorts: 23-year-old Mark Moran and 40-year-old Colombian national Didier Tordecilla Reyes. The trio conspired to smuggle an eye-watering 524kg of cocaine aboard a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB).
- Moran drove the RHIB from Norwich to Grimsby in a hired van.
- The group met in Hessle and launched the vessel from the local slipway.
- After a short trip, Moran and Reyes returned with the drugs, unloading them near Easington caravan park where Livingstone waited with a van.
Police Move In
NCA officers saw Livingstone signaling the boat with a torch and chatting on his mobile shortly before the RHIB arrived. Moran and Reyes dumped the boat on the beach and helped load hefty bags into Livingstone’s van. All three were promptly arrested, with the cocaine found in Livingstone’s vehicle.
Sentences Handed Down at Hull Crown Court
- Mark Moran, from Ardrishaig, Argyll and Bute, was convicted of conspiracy to import cocaine after an eight-day trial. He got 15 years behind bars on December 23.
- Daniel Livingstone admitted guilt on June 5 and was sentenced to seven years and nine months.
- Didier Tordecilla Reyes pleaded guilty in July and awaits sentencing.
A fourth man from Argyll and Bute was cleared by the jury.
NCA Warns of Class A Drugs Threat
“There’s no doubt these drugs would have been sold into communities around the UK,” said NCA Senior Investigating Officer Alan French. “But working with our partners, we have disrupted this crime group’s offending and made a huge dent in any profits they were due to make.”
“We are determined to do all we can to tackle the class A drugs threat and protect the public from the horrific damage it causes to our society.”
A Crushing Blow to UK Drug Gangs
The seizure of 524 kilos of cocaine delivers a major setback to organised crime gangs targeting the UK. Authorities vow to keep up the pressure with international agencies to stop the flow of deadly class A drugs wreaking havoc on communities nationwide.
