Fresh murder charges over Joel Bempah-Cumberbatch’s death
Two men have been charged with murder following the death of Joel Bempah-Cumberbatch, who suffered fatal gunshot injuries nearly a decade ago in Haringey. The shooting happened on August 30, 2016, at around 3:22 PM on Turnpike Lane, Wood Green.
Joel, then 25, was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound to the head that caused severe brain damage. After fighting for his life for years, he sadly died on September 20, 2022.
Past convictions and life sentences
Back in 2017, two men were convicted of attempted murder linked to the same shooting and were handed life sentences with a minimum term of 13 years. Following Joel’s death, Specialist Crime North detectives uncovered new evidence and submitted it to the Crown Prosecution Service, resulting in fresh murder charges.
