Violence Erupts as Armed Gang Clashes in City Centre

The disorder erupted just after 7pm involving roughly 30 people reportedly armed with weapons. One victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

In response, Wakefield police invoked Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. This harsh measure allowed officers to stop and search anyone or any vehicle without needing reasonable suspicion.

The stop-and-search order came into force at 11pm on Friday and extended for 24 hours. It covered key areas including Kirkgate Train Station, Wakefield College, Pinderfields Hospital, and the Eastmoor estate. The operation has now been stood down.

Police Boost Patrols and Urge Public to Come Forward

Police have stepped up patrols across Wakefield city centre to reassure residents and deter further violence.

“This was a serious incident that caused concern across the community. We are grateful to those who have come forward with information so far and encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage to speak with us,” said a Wakefield District CID spokesperson.

If you saw anything or have footage, contact Wakefield CID via Live Chat on the West Yorkshire Police website or call 101, quoting crime reference 13250145886. You can also report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police stress they will continue liaising with key community leaders and the Independent Advisory Group to maintain transparency around the use of these special powers in Wakefield.
