Beckenham burglar who terrified elderly couple jailed for 17 months
Raid Shatters Peace for Elderly Couple
An elderly couple in their 80s from Beckenham faced nightmare terror when their flat was violently broken into. On November 26 last year, the couple returned to find their balcony door smashed, their wardrobe ransacked, and their safe hauled out onto the balcony in a desperate burglary attempt.
“To arrive home to find it burgled was most traumatic,” the husband said. “Following the violation of our home, we feel vulnerable and now worry about what we may find when we return home.”
Another Break-In Just Days Later
Just four days later, on November 30, a nearby resident on Beckenham Grove near Shortlands station got a shock of his own. A masked intruder burst in after smashing a window and fled with his wife’s jewellery – including a ring and watch valued at £3,500. The victim armed himself with a cricket bat but the thief escaped before police arrived.
DNA Evidence Nails Brian Farias
Forensic experts found DNA linking 27-year-old Brian Farias at both crime scenes. His DNA was detected on a bedsheet at the first flat and also at the second break-in spot. Shockingly, Farias had been released on police bail for an unrelated case just two days before the first burglary.
‘Desperation’ Defence Falls Flat in Court
At Kingston Crown Court, Farias, a Chilean national, admitted the burglaries. His lawyer said he came to the UK on a six-month visa but lost his passport, which left him unable to get legal work. “He came here to find employment and send money back to his family,” said solicitor Rushnay Sikander. “He accepts it was the wrong way to go about it but he was desperate. He had lost himself during this time.”
Judge Simon Heptonstall slammed Farias for the crimes. “They worked and saved for 50 years, never taking help from the state. Now they feel vulnerable because you violated their home,” he said. “This persistent violation of people’s homes can only be punished by immediate custody.”
Farias was sentenced to 17 months behind bars for his ruthless burglaries that left innocent victims shaken and afraid in their own homes.
