Leicester Rapist Jailed for Six Years After Disturbing CCTV Hunt
Gagandeep Gulati preyed on a lone woman in Leicester’s Jubilee Square last September. He forced her to Castle Gardens, where he raped and sexually assaulted her. Shocking CCTV footage shows the entire chilling sequence—and evidence he filmed the attack on his phone, sharing clips with others.
Detective’s CCTV Break Leads to Arrest
Detective Constable Matt Smith from Signal, the specialist rape unit, led the investigation. Smith sifted through endless CCTV to identify the attacker. After a week of searching, Gulati’s movements were caught on camera—but his identity was still unknown.
When DC Smith visited Gulati’s accommodation, he instantly recognised him and arrested the 20-year-old. Gulati desperately tried to spin the story, falsely claiming the victim assaulted him first and even raped him.
Guilty on All Counts: Rapist Sentenced and Banned for Life
The Crown prosecuted Gulati on one count each of rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, and distributing intimate footage. On Friday 28 March, Leicester Crown Court found him guilty of every charge. He was handed six years behind bars and slapped with a life-long sex offender register order.
“He showed no remorse and tried to blame the victim,” said DC Smith. “She displayed immense bravery throughout the harrowing trial. Hopefully this verdict gives her some closure to move on.”
