Shocking Leicester Rape Case Ends with Six-Year Jail Term

A 20-year-old man has been locked up for six years after a harrowing rape in Leicester. This landmark verdict is a win for the survivor and highlights relentless police work.

Night of Terror in Jubilee Square

Gagandeep Gulati, 20, from Peacock Lane, Leicester, targeted a young woman out in Jubilee Square in September 2024. Winning her trust, he led her into nearby Castle Gardens, where he brutally raped and sexually assaulted her.

Worse still, Gulati filmed the attack and shared the appalling clips, inflicting even greater trauma.

“This was a calculated, degrading act that showed a complete lack of humanity,” said Detective Constable Matt Smith of Leicestershire Police’s specialised Signal team.

Detective Work Uncovers Damning Evidence

DC Smith’s team poured over hours of CCTV footage from Leicester city centre. They traced Gulati’s movements from the moment he met the victim to the assault site in Castle Gardens.

A crucial breakthrough came when officers spotted Gulati on camera and identified him during a home visit. He was arrested immediately.

Inside Gulati’s phone were videos proving not only the attack but his cruel intent to humiliate by sharing the footage.

“His actions were utterly depraved. The evidence was overwhelming, and his attempts to discredit the victim were shameful,” added DC Smith.

Guilty Verdict and Long Sentence

During the trial, Gulati showed no remorse and falsely claimed the victim attacked him. But video and forensic evidence crushed his defence.

The jury found him unanimously guilty. He was sentenced to six years in prison and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Survivor Praised, Wider Impact Highlighted

The victim’s bravery in speaking out has been widely applauded. DC Smith said, “Her courage was extraordinary. I hope this sentence brings some closure.”

This case sheds light on the grim reality of sexual violence. According to the Office for National Statistics, one in four women in England and Wales experience sexual assault in their lifetime.

CPS data reveals rape convictions rose 15% between 2022 and 2024 thanks to better victim support and evidence gathering.

Support Available for Victims

Leicestershire Police urge anyone affected by sexual violence to come forward. Call 101 or seek confidential help from charities like Rape Crisis.

“This case proves justice is possible. We will always listen and fight for the truth,” vowed DC Smith.
