Shock in Woolton as Engineer Murdered Outside Party
A man has been charged with murder after an engineer was deliberately run over outside a party in Liverpool’s Woolton area late Friday night.
Martin O’Donovan Fatally Injured
Martin O’Donovan, 46, suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle at around 11.45pm on April 18. Emergency services and local residents rushed to help, but despite desperate efforts, Mr O’Donovan died at the scene.
Harrowing Scene Leaves Community Stunned
Witnesses recalled chilling moments, with one woman screaming, “That’s my brother,” while others begged the victim to “stay with us.” The tragedy unfolded on a quiet residential street, leaving Woolton residents shaken to their core.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Stephen Bates, 41, of Liverpool, was arrested at the scene. Merseyside Police have now charged him with murder. He is remanded in custody and will appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

“Martin was a loving, caring, fun, and intelligent son, brother and uncle, who would light up any room with his humour and presence,” the family said. “He was highly devoted to his family and friends, and was always the first to offer a helping hand.”
