Cop Cleared of GBH After Nightclub Arrest Drama in Bangor!
Officer Found Not Guilty in High-Profile Trial
A North Wales police officer has been found not guilty of grievous bodily harm (GBH) following a tense six-day trial at Mold Crown Court. PC Ellis Thomas, 25, faced charges over the alleged injury of a 17-year-old boy during an arrest outside the Cube nightclub in Bangor in January 2023.
Independent Probe Dug Deep
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a thorough investigation after North Wales Police referred the complaint. Investigators pored over body-worn camera footage, CCTV, and took statements from officers, bystanders, and even minors present during the incident. PC Thomas was also interviewed under caution.
The inquiry wrapped up in July 2023, leading the IOPC to forward a detailed evidence file to the Crown Prosecution Service, which pushed forward with the GBH charge.
Verdict Delivered, IOPC Reacts
On Tuesday, the court cleared PC Thomas of all charges. Derrick Campbell, IOPC Regional Director, said:
“Having heard and tested the evidence, the court has now reached its decision and we respect its verdict. This was a serious allegation involving a child, so it was important that it was independently and thoroughly investigated.”
What’s Next for PC Thomas?
Though the criminal case is over, the IOPC confirmed it will work with North Wales Police on any potential internal disciplinary action against PC Thomas. The force has not yet commented on whether it will launch its own probe.
