Teen Jailed for 12 Years After 17-Year-Old Nathan Bawuah Stabbed to Death in Hackney
Brutal Attack on Hackney Road
An 18-year-old man has been locked up for 12 years after fatally stabbing 17-year-old Nathan Bawuah in a savage late-night attack in Hackney.
Rio Lue, from Pembury Road, Hackney, was sentenced today at Wood Green Crown Court. He was found guilty of manslaughter last November at Snaresbrook Crown Court and had already admitted possession of an offensive weapon.
Machete Assault Caught on CCTV
Police pieced together the chilling events using forensic evidence and CCTV footage. The video showed Lue cycling to the scene before a heated confrontation with Nathan.
During the clash on Hackney Road at around 11pm on February 17, 2024, Lue pulled out a large machete and stabbed Nathan in the chest. The wound caused catastrophic injuries, and Nathan was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts from officers and paramedics.
Detective Condemns “Cold-Blooded” Attack
Detective Sergeant Dean Musgrove, who led the investigation, described the assault as “brutal” and “cold-blooded,” lasting mere seconds but deadly.
“Our thoughts remain with Nathan’s friends and family as they try to come to terms with this tragedy, reassured that Lue is behind bars where he belongs,” Musgrove said.
Lue refused to answer questions during police interviews but later claimed self-defence. He was charged with murder on February 21, 2024.
Justice Served for Nathan’s Family
Specialist officers have supported Nathan’s grieving family throughout the trial. The sentencing marks a significant moment of justice for those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
