A woman has tragically died and nine others have been injured in a devastating crash on the M4 in Wiltshire.
The serious collision occurred just before 11.30pm on Sunday night (June 22) between junctions 16 and 17 on the westbound carriageway, near Swindon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead. A second woman, aged in her 70s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
Five other occupants from the same vehicle sustained minor injuries, while three people travelling in a second car were also taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Investigating Possible Hit-and-Run
Wiltshire Police has launched an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after receiving reports that a white vehicle may have been involved in the crash — but left the scene before officers arrived.
Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Team remain at the scene today as part of their ongoing enquiries.
A spokesperson said:
“This is a tragic incident that has claimed a woman’s life and left several others injured. We are actively investigating the circumstances and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw a white vehicle in the area before or after the collision.”
M4 Closed for Most of the Day
The westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 16 (Swindon West) and 17 (Chippenham) is expected to remain closed for most of Monday, causing significant disruption to commuters and holidaymakers alike.
Highways teams are assisting with diversions while forensic collision investigators carry out a detailed scene examination.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and allow extra time for travel.
