A London-bound train has collided with a van on a level crossing near Lower Road in Teynham, resulting in the death of the van driver, who is understood to have been an Amazon delivery driver.

The collision occurred at high speed just after 12:45pm and caused the van to catch fire. Emergency services, including Kent Police, British Transport Police, and the air ambulance, attended the scene.

The railway line between Newington and Faversham remains blocked in both directions, and a major investigation is underway.

In a statement issued this afternoon, British Transport Police said:

“Officers were called to the line in Tonge just after 12.45pm today (13 July) following reports of a train striking a van.
Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is currently being investigated.”

200 Passengers Evacuated

Around 200 train passengers were trapped on board for several hours following the collision. They were eventually detrained and transferred to another train under the supervision of emergency crews.

Road Closures and Disruption

  • Several local road closures remain in effect while recovery and investigation work continues.

  • Train services between Newington and Faversham are cancelled or delayed, and disruption is expected until at least 3:00pm.
