A 58-year-old man walked free from jail after a shocking hit-and-run left a cyclist with severe injuries in Basingstoke.

Abbas John, from Maidenhead Road, crashed into a 52-year-old woman cyclist in Jays Close on January 14. The victim suffered a fractured skull and multiple ankle fractures.

Driver Fled Scene, Then Caught

Instead of stopping to help, John sped off. He later admitted to careless driving, failing to stop, and not reporting the collision when he appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court last week.

Punishment: Driving Ban and Community Service

  • 180 hours of community service
  • £710 fine plus £85 court costs

Despite the serious nature of the crash, John avoided jail time.
