New Law Nets First Non-Fatal Strangulation Conviction in Newport
Non-fatal strangulation became its own criminal offence on 7 June under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Just ten days later, Joshua James Hunt, 26, was arrested in Newport after violently grabbing a woman known to him by the throat in public.
Shocking Assault Outside Isle of Wight Festival
At nearly midnight on 17 June, Hunt attacked the woman in Little London, Newport. She suffered bruises to her arms and was choked to the point she struggled to breathe. Although Hunt briefly released her when bystanders appeared, he quickly strangled her again. Three passersby intervened and police were called.
Hunt Admits Charges but Breaks Restraining Order Days Later
Hunt, from Petticoat Lane, Newport, pleaded guilty on 23 June to non-fatal strangulation and breaching a restraining order. He was handed an 18-month suspended sentence. However, just two days after sentencing, Hunt breached the restraining order again by attending a probation appointment with the victim, triggering his arrest.
Judge Sends Hunt to Jail for 20 Months
