Major Cocaine and Heroin Gang Busted in Wales

Detectives have smashed a massive drug network running throughout Wales, led by 31-year-old Nicholas Gale and his gang. Using encrypted messaging apps, Gale organised huge shipments of high-purity cocaine and heroin, dealing with both suppliers and customers to keep the illicit trade flowing.

Encrypted Messages Expose Drug Empire

Gale’s operation relied on encrypted chats to coordinate deals. On 14 July 2022, he arranged the collection of 18 kilos of cocaine through Spencer Perks, 42, who acted as a key courier. The haul was then split between dealer Jamie Christopher, 22, and customer Jake Garland, 28, who also ran his own cocaine distribution network.

Police arrested Gale, Perks, and Christopher on the same day and seized a whopping 12 kilos of cocaine, a cash counting machine, encrypted devices, an instruction note detailing drug amounts and customer postcodes, plus details about encrypted groups used to distribute the drugs. Officers also discovered a cannabis grow at Perks’ home.

Further Raids Net More Stash and Cash

On 27 September 2022, detectives swooped on Garland’s Newport home after recovering evidence from Gale’s devices. They found cocaine, digital scales, and more than £55,000 in cash, underlining the scale of the gang’s illegal operations.

Harsh Sentences at Cardiff Crown Court

On 6 December, Cardiff Crown Court handed down tough sentences to the four men:

  • Jake Garland (Newport): 15 years for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possession with intent to supply cocaine.
  • Nicholas Gale (Canton, Cardiff): 13 years 6 months for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.
  • Spencer Perks (Mountain Ash, Rhondda): 10 years 8 months for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and cannabis production.
  • Jamie Christopher (Fairwater, Cardiff): 9 years for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possession of cannabis.

Detective Inspector Dorian Williams said: “This week we have put four individuals behind bars for a significant number of years as part of Operation Cruz, which cracked the encrypted platforms used by this organised crime group to carry out their business.

“At Tarian, we’re committed to targeting drug supply and will leave no stone unturned in pursuing those who believe they are above the law.

“This crime group is now behind bars, thankfully unable to bring drugs and misery to families and communities across South Wales and beyond.”
