Swansea’s Mayhill in Chaos: 18 Locked Up After Teen Vigil Turns Into Violent Riot

A peaceful vigil for a local teenager exploded into a two-hour nightmare in Mayhill, Swansea, May 2021. Cars were set ablaze, homes smashed, and police attacked as the neighbourhood descended into chaos.

“Warzone” Unleashed During Vigil for Ethan Powell

The unrest followed a balloon release for 19-year-old Ethan Powell, who had tragically died the day before. What should have been a solemn moment turned brutal as rioters torched vehicles and vandalised homes. Residents and police faced vicious attacks. Judge Paul Thomas called it “the worst outbreak of mass violence” he had seen in his lifetime.

Heavy Sentences for Swansea Rioters

Swansea Crown Court has sentenced 18 offenders, aged 18 to 45, to more than 83 years behind bars combined. Four more young defendants face sentencing soon. Charges include riot and arson.

  • Kian Hurley, 24, Mayhill – 6 years, 9 months
  • Michael Parsons, 37, Dyfatty – 6 years, 3 months
  • Aaron Phillips, 24, Gendros – 6 years, 3 months
  • Mitchell Meredith, 20, Port Tennant – 6 years (young offenders institution)
  • Joshua Cullen, 32, Mayhill – 5 years, 6 months
  • Dean Price, 41, Waun Wen – 5 years, 6 months

Hurley received the longest sentence after a Newton Hearing rejected his account. Judge Thomas blasted him, saying: “You filmed the chaos and celebrated it.” Parsons was branded a “leading role” instigator, while Meredith was dubbed the “major rabble-rouser.” Meredith also received a five-year restraining order for domestic violence.

Community Left Shaken by Violence and Damage

The judge highlighted the devastating impact on Mayhill’s community, especially on children. He cited the Romain family, whose home was attacked with bricks while a toddler and baby were inside. Police were begged for help amid the screams and chaos.

“The rioters shamelessly hijacked Ethan Powell’s death for their own violent entertainment,” Judge Thomas said.

South Wales Police praised the investigation as “of the highest standard” and thanked residents for their crucial evidence. Detective Inspector Gareth Jones called the violence “extreme” and “a deliberate attack on the police.”

“The sheer number involved terrified local people who witnessed or had property damaged,” he said. “They marched with weapons – sticks, bricks – showing no regard for others or the serious harm they could cause.”

All sentenced individuals will serve half their term in custody before being considered for licence release.

Justice Follows Disorder

In total, 27 people aged 15 to 44 faced riot-related charges. All pled guilty except one, who was acquitted after trial. The disorder made national headlines and left a lasting scar on Swansea’s reputation.
