A former head of year has firmly denied the shocking murder and sexual assault of a 13-month-old toddler, facing over 30 serious charges.
Jamie Varley Pleads Not Guilty to Murder and Abuse
Jamie Varley, 36, showed no emotion as he pleaded not guilty to all counts during a brief hearing at Preston Crown Court. He appeared via video link from prison.
Varley is accused of killing 13-month-old Preston Davey – a child he and co-accused John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, were in the process of adopting.
Horrific Charges Laid Bare
The charges against Varley include murder, manslaughter, sexual assault, cruelty, grievous bodily harm, plus taking and sharing indecent images of the toddler between March and July 2023.
He also faces accusations of possessing extreme pornography from 2017 to July 2023.
Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley stand charged together over one count of sexually assaulting Preston. McGowan-Fazakerley denies sexual assault, two cruelty charges, and allowing the child’s death.
Tearful Moment as Mother Hears Charges
Preston’s mother broke down in tears as the horrifying charges were read out in court.
“I can only imagine how challenging that was for Preston’s mother to hear. I’m sorry, but it does have to be done,” said Judge Robert Altham.
The hearing lasted just 45 minutes. The case is set to continue over the coming months.
