Racist Shoplifter Lee Horton Jailed After Abusive Canterbury Crime Spree

A notorious thief who hurled racist abuse at shop staff during a Canterbury convenience store robbery has been slammed behind bars. Lee Horton, 45, struck at a Westgate shop on the evening of Sunday 26 January 2025.

Chocolate Theft Sparks Racist Rant

Kent Police rushed to St Dunstan’s Street just after 6pm after staff caught Horton sneaking out with unpaid chocolate. When confronted outside, he erupted with racial slurs before storming off. Officers launched an investigation, leading to Horton’s arrest and interview under caution.

Chain of Thefts and Burglary

At Canterbury Crown Court, Horton pleaded guilty not only to the chocolate theft but also two racially aggravated public order offences. He admitted six thefts of alcohol and groceries from Swale supermarkets between late May and mid-June, plus a burglary at Sports Direct, Queenborough on 16 May.

Prison Sentence Sends a Clear Warning

Formerly of St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, Horton was handed a 18-month jail term on Wednesday 12 November.

PC Andrew Kilby said: “Horton’s behaviour was completely unacceptable. Shop workers have the right to feel safe doing their job and protecting their businesses. We will never tolerate racist abuse in our communities, and I’m pleased that a custodial sentence has been imposed, offering the offender the opportunity to reflect on his actions and amend his ways.

“I hope it also reminds thieves who would persist in targeting communities that they can expect to be brought before the courts to face justice.”
