A brutal knife attack rocked Canterbury’s busy High Street, ending with a 13-year jail term for Mohammed Nour Hgar. The 23-year-old victim, Samare Gerezgihir, was stabbed to death after a violent late-night fight.
Deadly Night on Canterbury High Street
The fatal stabbing happened just before 11.30pm on 10 October 2024. Armed with a knife, Hgar plunged it into Samare’s chest, causing catastrophic injuries. Emergency crews rushed to the scene but couldn’t save him. Samare died in the early hours of 11 October.
CCTV Captures Savage Brawl
Police footage revealed Hgar confronted a group of men he knew before violence exploded. While the exact motive is unclear, police believe an ongoing feud existed between Hgar and the victim. After the stabbing, Hgar fled the scene, changing clothes to avoid capture. He was arrested at 5am in Herne Bay, having taken a taxi out of Canterbury.
Sentence Passed at Canterbury Crown Court
Charged with murder on 14 October, Hgar later admitted manslaughter, claiming excessive self-defence—a plea accepted by the court. On 4 December 2025, Canterbury Crown Court handed down a 13-year prison sentence.
Detective Inspector Colin McKeen said: “This sentencing reflects the severe consequences of carrying a knife. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who have shown immense strength during this trial. I hope this brings some justice and closure to all affected by this tragic event.”
