A man has been locked up for deliberately setting fire to his own flat in Tunbridge Wells. Ryan James, 41, started two blazes on August 24, 2024, ripping through his bedroom and living room in Dudley Road.
Locked Door Puts Neighbours in Danger
After lighting the fires, James calmly locked the front door behind him and walked away. Fire alarms screamed, alerting residents who quickly dialled 999. Two neighbours bravely tried to break in, fearing James was trapped inside — but had to retreat as the flames raged.
Kent Fire and Rescue smashed their way into the flat to douse the flames and stop the fire from spreading further.
Gym Visit Before Arson Arrest
Police discovered James had been at the gym just an hour before the blaze, stashing his belongings in a locker. He was arrested two days later in the town centre, still carrying keys to the flat.
At Maidstone Crown Court, James pleaded guilty to arson reckless as to whether life was endangered. On December 19, 2025, he was sentenced to six years and three months in prison, plus three years on licence.
Detective Hails Neighbours’ Heroism
“This was a reckless and vindictive act that endangered everyone in the building,” said Detective Constable Celia King. “James locked the door behind him, making it harder to stop the fire and causing more damage. His neighbours risked their own lives, thinking he was trapped inside.”
“Thankfully, no one was hurt. It’s right that James faces the consequences of his dangerous actions.”
