Chaos in Brighton: Drunk Aggressor Sparks Mayhem Outside Churchill Square
A 49-year-old man caused chaos in central Brighton on Saturday afternoon, sparking outrage and fear among shoppers.
Fisticuffs and Furious Threats
Police rushed to Churchill Square shopping centre at around 3pm on 13 December after reports of a man behaving aggressively and picking fights. The suspect, John Piggott, who has no fixed address, was promptly arrested at the scene.
Serious Charges Land on Disorderly Drunk
Piggott now faces multiple charges, including:
- Using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke violence
- Drunk and disorderly conduct in public
- Assaulting an emergency worker
- Assault
He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 15 December and was given conditional bail ahead of a hearing on 5 March 2026.

Police praised the public for pitching in during the drama. A man dressed as Santa played a key role in helping officers control the situation before the arrest.
