A former Wiltshire cop who got caught drink driving would have been kicked out on the spot – if he hadn’t quit first, a misconduct hearing has revealed.

Drink Driving Scandal Hits Wiltshire Police

Ex-PC Ted Andrews resigned just days before facing the consequences. The officer was caught behind the wheel drunk after a minor crash in Swindon on September 20, 2025. The shocking breach of trust was slammed at a fast-tracked hearing on January 5, led by Director of People Iain Gibson.

Andrews already pled guilty at Oxford Magistrates’ Court back in November, earning a 16-month driving ban and a £250 fine. Now, the panel confirmed his actions amounted to gross misconduct.

Instant Sacking Would’ve Followed

Gibson made it clear Andrews would have been shown the door immediately if he hadn’t handed in his resignation.

“Policing is a privilege,” Gibson said. “His drink driving lets down everyone committed to protecting our communities.”

“Drink driving can have devastating impacts on individuals, other road users, and the community at large. For an officer to be caught over the limit is totally inexcusable,” he added.

Public Trust Shattered

Gibson warned that incidents like this risk smashing public confidence in the police force.

“His actions threaten to undo the hard work of the vast majority who strive to keep roads safe. He is now barred from policing,” he confirmed.

Under Police Conduct Regulations 2020, Andrews has 10 working days to appeal the ruling.
