Counter Terrorism Police swooped to arrest three men suspected of aiding a foreign spy agency – linked to China – under the National Security Act 2023.

Spies Caught Red-Handed

On Wednesday, 4 March, officers arrested three men on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, in breach of Section 3 of the National Security Act. The suspects are a 39-year-old in London, a 68-year-old in Powys, Wales, and a 43-year-old in Pontyclun, Wales. They remain in police custody under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE).

Big Security Crackdown

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, confirmed the arrests came amid a surge in national security cases.

“We have seen a significant increase in our casework relating to national security in recent years,” she said. “These arrests are part of a proactive investigation. While serious, there is no immediate threat to the public. Our inquiry continues, and we thank the public for their support.”

Widespread Raids Across the UK

Police searched multiple addresses during the operation, including locations in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff. The arrests and searches had backing from Counter Terrorism Police teams in Wales and Scotland, showing a UK-wide effort to clamp down on espionage.

Investigation Ongoing

The probe into suspected foreign spying is still underway as officers piece together the full extent of the activity. The case highlights growing concerns over foreign interference and the government’s tough stance on national security breaches.
