The M5 is closed southbound near Exeter Airport following a huge 11-vehicle collision that has left at least two people injured. An air ambulance has landed at the scene, with emergency crews scrambling to assist. Drivers face severe delays and are advised to steer clear.

Chaos Between Junctions 28 and 29

The smash happened at around 11:30 am between junction 28 (Cullompton/A373 Honiton Road) and junction 29 (Exeter/A30). The southbound carriageway remains shut to allow paramedics, fire crews, and police to work safely.

A witness described the crash as “very serious” involving multiple vehicles. Another added: “Crash between Cullompton and Exeter.”

Long Delays and Traffic Nightmare

Commuters are trapped on the motorway, with some reporting standstills for over 90 minutes. Retired firefighter Graham Norman from Devon said: “We’ve been stationary since about midday. We counted about five ambulances, three fire engines, and several police cars.”

National Highways urges drivers to exit at J28 and follow diversion signs via the A373. Traffic is already backing up to junction 27 (Tiverton), with congestion spilling onto surrounding routes as motorists try to escape the gridlock.

Emergency Services on Full Alert

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue confirmed they sent three fire engines. A spokesperson said: “One person was trapped and cut free of their vehicle using hydraulic tools before being airlifted to the hospital.”

National Highways has yet to give a reopening estimate. The northbound lanes have reopened after earlier restrictions were lifted.

Motorists: Avoid the area, expect major delays, and follow official diversions. Stay tuned for updates.
