A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years for the murder of a 63-year-old man in Ipswich.

Police were called just before 6pm on New Year’s Day 2025 to a residence on Hawthorn Drive, where they discovered William “Billy” McNicholl deceased inside the home. The 63-year-old Ipswich resident had suffered fatal head injuries and a stab wound to the right shoulder.

Suffolk Constabulary’s Major Investigation Team launched a murder investigation following the deadly attack. On 22 January 2025, a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and later released on bail. He was re-arrested in July after turning 18 and charged with murder and cannabis supply.

Jake McMillan, aged 19, from Peterhouse Close, Ipswich, was found guilty at Ipswich Crown Court on 6 February 2025.

On Thursday, 23 April, McMillan was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years before being eligible for parole, including time already served in custody. Additionally, he received a concurrent seven-month sentence for cannabis supply.
