Emergency teams are responding to a serious three-vehicle collision on the M20 near Junction 3 (Swanley) this morning, October 16, 2024. The crash occurred just before 7am and has resulted in the motorway being closed in both directions, causing extensive traffic disruption.

The M20 eastbound between Junction 1 (M25) and Junction 3 (M26) is fully blocked due to the incident. Westbound lanes are also closed at Junction 1, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. To help manage congestion, traffic is being diverted off at the exit slip road and rerouted back on via the entry slip road.

Motorists travelling towards London are facing significant delays, with queues extending back to Junction 2 (Dartford). Vehicles are being directed to use London-bound slip roads to avoid the crash area, but delays remain severe.

Authorities recommend using the M25 and M26 as diversion routes. For those on the M25 clockwise heading towards Maidstone, it is advised to take the A2 coastbound at Junction 2, continue on the M2, and then join the A249 southbound at Junction 5.

A National Highways spokesperson confirmed, “Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines at the scene, assisting Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service.”

All traffic is currently held on the main carriageway between Junction 1 of the M25 and Junction 3 of the M26. The coastbound entry slip from the clockwise M25 remains closed as emergency crews continue their work.

Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible due to the ongoing disruption. Motorists are advised to stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
