Curtis Arnold, known for filming Nicola Bulley’s recovery, was arrested tonight outside Downing Street amid escalating far-right protests in Central London. The unrest follows violent riots earlier this week in Southport.
Social media posts show protesters lighting flares in the street and throwing glass bottles at police officers. Demonstrators chanted “save our kids” while waving St George flags, increasing tensions in the heart of the city.
The protests were sparked by outrage over the murder of three young girls in Merseyside, as well as attacks on several others. A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with these crimes. However, the situation was exacerbated by false online rumours falsely claiming the suspect was a refugee. Police have since confirmed the teenager was born in Cardiff.
Violence first broke out near a Southport mosque on Tuesday, driven by these unfounded rumours. Police reported that 53 officers and three police dogs were injured during the disorder, with four arrests made so far.
Tonight’s protest in London was led by former actor turned activist Laurence Fox and was restricted by the Metropolitan Police to the hours of 7 PM to 8:30 PM. Superintendent Neil Holyoak, who is in charge of policing the event, said: “The public’s strong feelings about the tragic Southport events are understandable, but the violent, unlawful disorder that followed was completely unacceptable and fueled by misinformation.”
He added: “Everyone has the right to protest, but we must balance that with the public’s right to go about their lives safely. That’s why we’ve set conditions and deployed extra officers across London.”
Superintendent Holyoak also revealed that police are in discussions with protest organisers, local community groups, businesses, and religious leaders, especially within the Muslim community affected by recent unrest in Southport. He urged: “Protest calmly and within the law. Any breach will be dealt with swiftly.”
Police presence has been significantly increased to prevent further violence. Officers, including armed units, are prepared to respond to any disorder.
The violent outbursts have drawn widespread condemnation from community leaders and the public. Many have called for calm and unity amid the chaos fueled by false rumours and misinformation.
