A Bromsgrove man, Gary Bennett, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison, with a minimum term of 18 years, following his conviction on 57 counts of historic child sexual abuse. Bennett, aged 61 and residing at Shenstone Close, Bromsgrove, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday 8 May.
The abuse committed by Bennett spanned nearly a decade, occurring between 1995 and 2004. His victims included seven children and teenagers — six boys and one girl — from various locations including Leominster, Bridgnorth, Kidderminster, Stourbridge, Habberley, and London. The charges against him included rape, attempted rape, buggery, and indecency with a child.
The investigation into Bennett’s crimes began in May 2018 following initial reports. Inspector Julie Taylor, who led the case, described the abuse as “absolutely sickening” and acknowledged the lifelong impact it will have on the victims. She commended the victims for their “immense courage” in coming forward and praised their patience and dignity throughout the lengthy legal proceedings. “Despite delays, they remained determined to see justice done,” she added.
Inspector Taylor also urged anyone who has experienced sexual assault, whether recent or historic, to contact the police. She assured victims that “your case will be taken seriously and you will be listened to.”
