The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued urgent travel warnings for 25 countries following escalating tensions and conflict in the Middle East. British holidaymakers are advised to exercise caution as popular destinations such as Cyprus, Turkey, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka remain open but may experience disruptions and increased security risks.

The UK government strongly advises against all travel to countries currently affected by war, terrorism, or serious political unrest. These countries include:

  • Afghanistan: Violent conflict and lawlessness.
  • Syria: Ongoing civil war with extreme danger.
  • Yemen: Heavy fighting, relentless airstrikes, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
  • Iraq, Israel/Palestinian Territories, Lebanon: Active frontline battles and missile strikes.
  • Libya and Sudan: Travel only for essential reasons in tightly controlled zones.

Airlines and tour operators generally offer cancellations or rebookings if your destination is in a red zone. Travellers are urged not to take risks with their safety.

Some areas face partial travel restrictions or bans due to volatility, including:

  • Turkey: Avoid all areas within 10km of the Syrian border.
  • Egypt: Stay away from North Sinai and the Western Desert; Red Sea resorts remain open but with heightened security.
  • Saudi Arabia: No-go zones within 10km of Yemen’s border.
  • Pakistan: Restricted travel near the Afghanistan border, Line of Control, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • Other risk spots include Tunisia, Togo, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Ukraine, and Western Sahara.

Fresh travel alerts have been issued for Cyprus, Turkey, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka. While these destinations are not war zones, they face new warnings due to regional instability and disruptions in airspace:

  • Cyprus: Tourist-friendly but on alert for terrorist threats and possible travel chaos.
  • Turkey: Coastal holiday hotspots remain open, but travellers should avoid the Syrian border zone.
  • Maldives: Flights may be delayed or cancelled due to Middle East airspace closures.
  • Sri Lanka: No conflict on the island, but travel disruptions are expected through Middle Eastern hubs.

UK travellers are advised to:

  • Check the latest FCDO travel advice before booking, a week before travel, and 24 hours prior to departure.
  • Confirm flexible booking and cancellation policies with airlines and tour operators.
  • Review travel insurance carefully, as ignoring FCDO warnings may void coverage.
  • Sign up for travel alerts and keep emergency contacts readily available.

Holidays to Cyprus, Turkey, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka can continue but travellers should remain vigilant. The ongoing Middle East crisis means plans could change rapidly.
