On May 5, a massive blaze broke out at a warehouse on Lombard Road, South Wimbledon. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters responded to the intense fire that caused significant damage to the ground floor and the exterior of the warehouse, completely destroying a stack of timber.

Two individuals suffered smoke inhalation and received treatment at the scene from London Ambulance Service crews. Station Commander Tom Conlon stated, “The fire was producing heavy smoke in the local area. People were advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area.”

Fire crews deployed two 32-metre turntable ladders to combat the flames effectively. Additionally, the Brigade’s drone team provided vital aerial views that supported the firefighting efforts.

The fire is being treated as accidental and is believed to have started due to unsafe disposal of smoking materials. A spokesperson from London Fire Brigade emphasized, “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life.”

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers received 12 calls reporting the incident. They were alerted at 2:55 pm, and firefighters had the fire under control by 7:32 pm. Crews from Wimbledon, Mitcham, New Malden, Sutton, Kingston, West Norwood, and nearby stations rushed to the scene to assist.
