In recent days, officers have been dealing with a number of reports involving a small group of individuals.
These reports have related to anti social behaviour, verbal abuse, open drug use and theft from local shops in and around Fore Street.
As a result, officers applied for a Section 35 Dispersal Order to be authorised which means if a person is found committing anti social behaviour or is likely to cause issues in the area over the next 48 hours, they will be committing an offence and could be arrested.
Sgt Charly Chilton said: “I would like to stress that the decision to make use of the Section 35 Dispersal powers in this instance has not been taken lightly, and whilst we understand that being street homeless is not a crime, we cannot turn a blind eye to the anti social behaviour issues that have been linked to this small group of individuals which are causing concern and upset amongst our local community.
“We know the difficulties some of these people face and please be reassured that we are working closely with the Wiltshire Council Homeless Team and the town council to ensure they are being provided with the relevant support.
“Officers will continue to patrol the area over the coming days to ensure the order is being adhered to.”
