Residents in Chatham are being urged to keep windows and doors closed after a major fire broke out at a derelict building on Ordnance Street this evening.

Ten Fire Engines Battling Blaze

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) confirmed it was called to the scene at 7:16pm on Tuesday, July 29.

Ten fire engines and a height vehicle are currently in attendance. Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, are using main jets to tackle the blaze.

A spokesperson said:

“Please share this update with anyone in the affected area who may not have access to the internet.”

Due to the large volume of smoke, people living or travelling nearby are being advised to:

• Close windows and doors

• Avoid the area where possible
