Hall Green Murder: Two Men Charged in Fatal Robbery of 83-Year-Old Neil O’Donnell

The fatal assault of 83-year-old Neil O’Donnell during an attempted robbery in Hall Green has shocked the Birmingham community and raised fresh concerns about violent crime in the city.

The incident occurred on Cateswell Road around 2:30 PM on May 14, when Mr. O’Donnell was approached and attacked by a man demanding his watch and phone. The assailant used a screwdriver to inflict an arm injury before fleeing the scene empty-handed.

Although Mr. O’Donnell was treated and discharged from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, he was readmitted on May 17 and sadly died from his injuries on May 21.

Murder Charges Filed

Two men, Wesley McDonnell (46) and Tony Griffin (54), have been charged with murder and conspiracy to rob. They appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on May 24 and have been remanded in custody.

Detective Inspector Nigel Box said:
“Our thoughts are with Mr. O’Donnell’s family. We’re offering them full support as we continue to investigate.”

The Hall Green community has expressed shock and outrage.

“This is heartbreaking. Neil was a kind man. We need safer streets in Birmingham,” said a local resident named Sarah on X.

Violent Crime on the Rise in Birmingham

According to ONS data, Birmingham reported over 40,000 violent crimes in 2024. This case adds to a disturbing trend of elderly and vulnerable individuals being targeted.
