Sheffield United Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham Speaks Out Against Online Racism

Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has called on football enthusiasts to exercise restraint and “think before they type” after disclosing that he was subjected to racial abuse on social media.

The revelation comes in the aftermath of Sheffield United’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday, September 16. Foderingham specifically accused opposing fans of engaging in racist behavior and making “family threats” towards him through online platforms.

Taking to Instagram, Foderingham expressed his stance, stating, “I don’t mind opposition fans calling me every name under the sun. But be easy with the racism and family threats. Think before you type.”

Following Foderingham’s remarks, Sheffield United issued a formal statement denouncing the racist and abusive messages directed at the goalkeeper. The statement affirmed the club’s unwavering stance against racism within the sport.

“Sheffield United condemn the racist, abusive and threatening messages that have been sent to Wes Foderingham after yesterday’s game against Spurs,” the club’s statement conveyed. It further stated that Sheffield United would collaborate with relevant entities to investigate the matter and provide support to Wes Foderingham.

The club unequivocally emphasised, “There is no room for racism in our game.”

During the game against Tottenham Hotspur, Foderingham was twice beaten by strikes from Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski in the late stages, ultimately leading to Sheffield United’s defeat.

Sheffield United, under the management of Paul Heckingbottom, continues to seek their first victory in the Premier League following their return to the top flight. The club has managed to secure just one point from their opening five fixtures.
