London Zoo Celebrates Arrival of Second Critically Endangered Gorilla Baby

London Zoo Celebrates Arrival of Second Critically Endangered Gorilla Baby – UKNIP

Keepers at London Zoo are “over the moon” after a second critically endangered gorilla baby was born – less than a month after the arrival of another.

The adorable infant was born to mum Effie at 7.44pm on February 8, just three and half weeks after Mjukuu, another Western lowland gorilla, had her baby.

Effie went into labour at around 7.04pm, but the birth was not straightforward as the baby was wrapped in its umbilical cord.

Keepers kept a vigil over the weekend and the cord has now fallen off.

London Zoo’s primates section manager Kathryn Sanders said everyone was “over the moon”.

She said: “Effie and her baby kept us on our toes for the first 72 hours, as we wanted to make sure that the attached umbilical cord didn’t pose any risk to the newborn.

“It was a huge relief to see baby feeding, moving normally and to get a glimpse of its bright eyes peeking out from mum’s arms.”

A half-sibling to the baby born in January, the baby – whose sex is not yet known – was also fathered by 19-year-old silverback Kiburi, who arrived at London Zoo from Tenerife in November 2022 as part of its conservation breeding programme.

Kathryn added: “The two youngsters will now grow up side by side, much like their older siblings Alika and Gernot did – they’ll love having a permanent playmate!”

McDonald’s Breakfast Wrap Returns Following Shortage of Key Ingredient

McDonald’s Breakfast Wrap Returns Following Shortage of Key Ingredient

Many McDonald’s fans will have been disappointed (and possibly shocked) to discover the iconic breakfast wrap was taken off the menu over the weekend, only days after making its long-awaited return.

The item was removed from the fast-food chain’s menus on February 9 “due to unprecedented demand” having only been added on February 7.

This was the first time it had appeared since 2020 after more than 5,000 DMs and 22 Change.org petitions.

On X, formerly Twitter, @McDonaldsUK previously posted a heartfelt open letter, saying: “Dear Breakfast Wrap fans.

“We’ve got egg on our face.

“Turns out the return of our iconic has been so popular, it’s created a shortage of a key ingredient, who knew you loved eggs so much?

“We understand that it’s no yolk to have your breakfast plans disrupted and realise this may have left you feeling a bit shell-shocked.

“We’ll soldier on and, working tirelessly to bring it back. Hopefully next week.

“We thank every single fan of the Breakfast Wrap for your egg-ceptional patience and understanding.”

McDonald’s brings back the Breakfast Wrap (again) after ‘egg shortage’

But have no fear, as McDonald’s has stuck to their word and the Breakfast Wrap is available once more from today (February 13).

Customers didn’t waste any time heading to their local restaurant, as one person said on X: “Had my first McDonald’s breakfast in years. Welcome back the breakfast wrap. Don’t take this away from me again McDonald’s!”

“I’m getting 2 tomorrow now just in case they disappear again,” added another.

This person who can’t get enough wrote: “Ive had 4 since theyve been back…. this is going to be a problem.”

“I mean I had one this morning. And by one, I mean two,” revealed this user.

Yet some fans are still wanting more, as one account commented: “Bagels please. They’re back in the USA. Come on, no excuses.”

Sex Offender Jailed After Bragging About Crime

Sex Offender Jailed After Bragging About Crime

A Doncaster man has been sentenced to over a decade in jail for sexually assaulting a child and sharing explicit content with another convicted paedophile.

Ryan Madine, 24, subjected his young victim to multiple sexual attacks, which he recorded and sent to James Mitchell, who was also involved in child sexual offences. Mitchell not only encouraged Madine’s abhorrent behaviour but also exchanged child abuse images with him.

The charges against Madine came after a thorough 18-month investigation conducted by the Doncaster Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) Team, in collaboration with the Digital Forensics Unit and Nottinghamshire Police. The investigation uncovered video messages in which Madine sexually assaulted and engaged in oral sex with a vulnerable young child. Additionally, over 700 indecent images of children were found on one of Madine’s digital devices.

Initially denying any sexual interest in children, Madine later pleaded guilty to a range of offences, including assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, sexually assaulting a child, voyeurism, and sexual communication with a child. He also admitted to making and distributing indecent photographs of a child.

At Sheffield Crown Court, both Madine and Mitchell, 31, from Retford in Nottinghamshire, were sentenced to 11-and-a-half years in prison. The judge also imposed lifelong registration on the Sex Offenders’ Register and issued restraining orders for both individuals.

Fiona Booth, the Investigating Officer, praised the dedication and professionalism of the team involved in bringing Madine to justice. She emphasised the severity of the crimes committed, stating that Madine showed no regard for the suffering he caused his victims. Booth also highlighted the ongoing need for support and specialised care for the victims in the years to come.

Man Sentenced for Brutal Teen Assault in Sheffield

Man Sentenced for Brutal Teen Assault in Sheffield

A harrowing incident unfolded on Washington Road in Sheffield on July 3, 2023, when two teenage girls, aged 16 and 17, faced a brutal assault by 21-year-old Cheyenne Sirvent. Armed with a metal pole, Sirvent launched a violent attack outside his property, leaving one victim with serious facial injuries requiring surgery and rendering her unconscious.

The assailant, displaying no remorse, continued his assault on the second victim, aged 17, before chasing her down the street. In a distressing phone call, the 16-year-old victim managed to reach her mother, uttering the plea, “Help me, Mum, I am going to die.” The injured teenager, showing incredible resilience, sought help from a passing motorist and her friend upon regaining consciousness.

Simultaneously, Sirvent, fearing reprisals, called for assistance to protect himself from what he perceived as armed individuals approaching his residence. Responding officers and dog handlers arrived at a chaotic scene on Washington Road, detaining Sirvent, who was found in possession of a kitchen knife.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) worked tirelessly, investing 30 consecutive hours to piece together evidence, medical records, clothing, and witness accounts. The case was presented to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), resulting in Sirvent being charged with two counts of Section 18 wounding.

In court today (February 2), Sirvent pled guilty to two counts of Section 20 Grievous Bodily Harm and possession of a bladed article and offensive weapon. Sheffield Crown Court sentenced him to two years and two months in prison.

Detective Constable Ashleigh Doggett, the investigating officer, expressed satisfaction with the lengthy sentence, acknowledging the long-term impact on the young victims. She emphasized the commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, ensuring the streets remain safe from individuals who seek to instil fear in the lives of others. The hope is that, with support and the knowledge of their attacker behind bars, the two teenagers can now begin the process of moving on with their lives.

Valentine’s Day Romance in Jeopardy as Takeaway Delivery Drivers Plan Strike

Valentine’s Day Romance in Jeopardy as Takeaway Delivery Drivers Plan Strike

This Valentine’s Day, as couples across the nation plan romantic dinners at home, they might face an unexpected hiccup. A significant number of takeaway delivery drivers, crucial to the evening’s festivities, are planning to lay down their delivery bags in a strike for better pay and improved working conditions. The strike, set to disrupt services on one of the year’s busiest nights for takeaways, is expected to involve as many as 3,000 drivers and riders. The action will span from 17:00 to 22:00 GMT, affecting four major food delivery apps, including Deliveroo and Uber Eats.
Video of last strike by drivers on 2nf February 2024 Organized by Delivery Job UK, a grassroots organization with a large Brazilian membership, the strike aims to highlight the pressing issues faced by delivery personnel. These workers, often seen zipping through the streets to deliver food promptly, are fighting against low pay and the precarious nature of their jobs. As self-employed contractors, they fall outside the purview of employment laws that mandate a minimum “national living wage,” currently at £10.42 an hour, with an upcoming increase to £11.44 in April.
Despite the festive atmosphere typically associated with Valentine’s Day, these drivers are choosing to stand in solidarity for a cause they believe in. “Sacrificing a few hours for our rights is essential, instead of continuing to work incessantly for insufficient wages,” stated Delivery Job UK in their announcement of the strike. The drivers’ demands are clear: they seek fair compensation for their labor, tired of exploitation and the daily risks associated with their jobs.
This strike not only threatens to dampen Valentine’s Day celebrations but also puts a spotlight on the growing discontent among gig economy workers. As the dependence on app-based delivery services continues to rise, so does the scrutiny on the working conditions of those at the heart of these operations. The delivery drivers hope that their action will not only lead to negotiations for better pay but also spark a broader conversation about the gig economy’s future and the rights of those who power it.
