A postbox in Dartford has undergone a unique transformation, resembling a crème egg, amidst a recent wave of “criminal damage” incidents where postboxes across the area have been creatively painted.

The spree began with the painting of 26 postboxes in gold between Wednesday, January 31, and Monday, February 5, 2024, with most of the incidents concentrated in the Temple Hill area. Subsequently, on Monday, February 19, postboxes at Trevithick Drive, Wellcome Avenue, and Joyce Green Lane took on a pink hue adorned with gold spots, reminiscent of the popular character Mr Blobby.

Today, a postbox on St Vincents Road emerged painted in purple, gold, and red, bearing the label “Creme Egg.”

Royal Mail, in response to these incidents, stated on February 7 that efforts were underway to restore the postboxes to their original red paint. However, despite many postboxes being repainted red over the weekend by residents, several were once again adorned with colours this week.

Kent Police, acknowledging the situation, confirmed that inquiries are ongoing. Previously, on February 13, a man was arrested in connection with the initial postbox painting incidents and has been released on bail until May 4, pending further investigation.

The arrest occurred when police, patrolling Oldfield Place, Dartford, spotted an individual matching the description of a suspect.

Dartford’s community has expressed mixed sentiments regarding the unconventional postbox makeovers. While some residents appear to appreciate the creative flair, others view it as a deviation from the traditional style. Opinions were shared on social media, with one commenter expressing disdain for the “Crème egg” postbox’s appearance, describing it as “absolutely terrible,” while another praised the attention to detail, remarking, “They have even got the font spot on.
