Ex-Met Cop Jailed for Dishonesty After Bogus ID in Burglary Case
George Glassey, a former detective constable with the Metropolitan Police, has been found guilty of gross misconduct. A special case hearing on 18 May confirmed he breached standards of honesty, integrity, and engaged in discreditable conduct while attached to the Central East Command Unit.
Resigned Before Immediate Sacking
Glassey quit the Met on 2 March, just before he faced being dismissed without notice. He was jailed for four months on 9 April after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court.
Fake ID Statement Put Burglary Conviction at Risk
Back in October 2019, Glassey falsely claimed to have positively identified a burglary suspect at Bethnal Green Police Station custody suite. This lie threatened a dangerous miscarriage of justice.
Once exposed, the Met swiftly alerted the Crown Prosecution Service, leading to the quashing of the unsafe conviction.
Met Police Chief Condemns Dishonesty
“The public deserve the best from us at all times and I’m afraid, on this occasion, this former officer fell far below the high standards that the public expect of their police service,” said Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett.
“Policing means you act with the utmost professionalism and integrity at all times. This is not up for negotiation. There is simply no place for wrongdoing and gross dishonesty in the Metropolitan Police Service, and we will always work quickly and robustly to root it out.”
