Australian racing driver Joey Mawson, a close friend of Michael Schumacher’s son Mick, has been named as the accused in a disturbing rape case involving one of the F1 legend’s nurses.
Alleged Attack Inside Schumacher Family Mansion
The nurse was part of the 24/7 care team looking after Michael Schumacher following his severe head injury from a skiing accident. Prosecutors say Mawson assaulted her while she was unconscious in a staff-only bedroom in 2019.
The nurse reportedly had been drinking vodka cocktails, felt unwell, and was carried to bed without being undressed. Mawson, who was staying next door, allegedly entered her room twice to attack her.
Two colleagues claimed to have heard or seen nothing, but the victim noticed “material evidence” the next day. She only reported the attack two years later, reportedly fearing job loss.
Accused Driver Flees, Trial Delayed
Mawson, 29, fled Switzerland for Australia and has not been heard from in months. He skipped the opening of his rape trial, which was then postponed. Prosecutor Xavier Christe confirmed Mawson’s non-appearance.
Despite Mawson’s absence, the victim’s lawyer insisted, “the evidence is overwhelming.” Three Swiss judges adjourned the trial with a new date to be set.
Switzerland and Australia have an extradition treaty, so Mawson could be forced back for trial.
