BUS ARREST Cop’s Assault Win Tossed After Bus Arrest Sparks Outcry

PC Perry Lathwood, 51, was cleared yesterday after being convicted of assault for dragging a woman by the arm in front of her young son. Footage of the arrest on a Croydon bus went viral, exposing the officer’s shocking behaviour — including calling the woman “love” and a “daft cow.”

Inappropriate Language Fuels Police Misconduct Claim

The Met police officer used condescending language when arresting Jocelyn Agyemang in July 2023. Barrister Cecily White slammed the comments as “dismissive and condescending,” especially towards women.

The incident occurred as officers helped bus ticket inspectors check fares. Ms Agyemang was dropping off her child at her mother’s house before heading to an appointment. When asked to show her bus ticket, she was detained despite having paid the fare, a fact later confirmed after officers checked her Oyster card.

Assault Conviction Quashed, Officer Gets Warning

PC Lathwood was initially convicted and fined £1,500 after bruising Ms Agyemang’s arm during the arrest. However, the conviction was overturned in September. While cleared of other allegations related to equality, use of force, and conduct, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) handed him a written warning.

Public Outcry vs Police Federation Defence

IOPC director Amanda Rowe condemned the officer’s conduct, highlighting the trauma caused to Ms Agyemang and her child. “Police officers must treat members of the public with respect and courtesy,” she said. “This was a high-profile and distressing incident that still affects the woman involved.”

In contrast, Paula Dodds, chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, defended PC Lathwood. She warned against judging officers from “short video clips” and pleaded for privacy for the officer and his family. “PC Lathwood can finally put this incident behind him and carry on his career,” she urged.

Meanwhile, the Met confirmed PC Lathwood was on restricted duties during the misconduct process but remains with the force. This controversial case has reignited debate over police professionalism and accountability in London’s public transport system.
