Kent Drivers Brace for Night-Time M20 Closures in February 2025

Motorists, take note! The M20 motorway in Kent is set for a series of overnight shutdowns all through February 2025. National Highways will be carrying out crucial CCTV upgrade works on the coastbound carriageway, slip roads, and lanes between Junctions 2 and 6, west of Maidstone.

When and Where Are the Closures?

  • Coastbound carriageway (Junctions 2 to 4): Closed from 10pm on Monday 3 February to 5am on Friday 7 February, for four consecutive nights.
  • Slip roads:
    • Junction 4 coastbound on-slip: 8pm, Monday 10 Feb to 6am, Tuesday 11 Feb.
    • Junction 6 London-bound on-slip: 8pm, Tuesday 18 Feb to 6am, Wednesday 19 Feb.
    • Junction 5 London-bound on-slip: 8pm, Wednesday 19 Feb to 6am, Thursday 20 Feb.
  • Lane closures both directions (Junctions 3 to 5): From 8pm, Monday 10 Feb through 6am, Friday 28 Feb.

How to Navigate the Diversions

  • Coastbound (Junctions 2–4): Use the A20 London Road and A228 Ashton Way.
  • Junction 4 coastbound on-slip: Divert via M20 westbound, M26 westbound, M26 J2a Nepicar Interchange, back eastbound on M26, then rejoin M20 coastbound.
  • Junction 6 London-bound on-slip: Take Junction 5 Coldharbour Interchange, A229 Chatham Road, then M20 Junction 6 Running Horse Roundabout.
  • Junction 5 London-bound on-slip: Follow the same route via Junction 5 Coldharbour and A229 Chatham Road to rejoin M20 London-bound.

Why the Hassle?

“We need to renew closed-circuit TV cameras, which assist with traffic management on the M20. To do this safely, traffic management and diversions will be in place,” said a National Highways spokesperson.

What Drivers Need to Know

Expect delays and plan journeys accordingly during these overnight works. National Highways urges all drivers to check live traffic updates and diversion routes before travelling.

Keep an eye out for further updates as the works continue throughout February.
