Dispersal Order Issued Ahead of Protest in Epping to Tackle Anti-Social Behaviour

A dispersal order will be enforced in Epping from 2pm on Thursday 24 July amid concerns about potential anti-social behaviour linked to protest activity in the town.

The order, which remains in effect until 8am on Friday 25 July, covers a wide area including the town centre, transport hubs, and Epping Tube Station, and gives police powers to disperse individuals suspected of causing or planning to cause disruption.

Police Statement

Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow of Essex Police said:

“We have identified a small group of people who are intent on committing anti-social behaviour, which is not acceptable.
Where there has been previous protest activity, we have seen sustained anti-social behaviour in addition to any disorder that we have dealt with during the protest itself.”

He added that the order is not aimed at lawful or peaceful protest, but is intended to ensure the safety of the community and maintain public order.

Additional Powers Under Consideration

Police have not ruled out the use of further legal powers, depending on how the situation develops. Officers will be deployed across key locations in Epping to monitor activity and respond swiftly to any incidents.

“If you’re planning to come to Essex to commit crime or disorder, don’t bother. You will be dealt with,” said Ch Supt Anslow.

What the Dispersal Order Covers

The Section 35 dispersal zone includes:

Anyone directed to leave must not return to the area for 48 hours or risk arrest and prosecution.
