RAC Urges Caution as Storm Isha Approaches UK Roads

With Storm Isha set to hit the United Kingdom, the RAC Breakdown spokesperson, Alice Simpson, has issued a statement advising drivers to exercise caution and prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions. The Met Office has issued a series of Amber and Yellow weather warnings in anticipation of the storm’s arrival.

Ms Simpson emphasized the need for drivers to take necessary precautions when encountering the adverse weather conditions expected with Storm Isha. The storm is predicted to bring heavy rain and very strong winds, which could lead to challenging driving conditions.

Drivers are advised to consider the following safety measures:

  1. Reduce Speed: Lower driving speeds to ensure better control of the vehicle in adverse weather conditions.
  2. Increase Stopping Distance: Leave extra stopping distance between your vehicle and the one in front to account for potentially slippery roads and reduced visibility.
  3. Delay Journeys: If possible, consider postponing non-essential journeys, especially in areas expected to be severely affected by the storm.
  4. Beware of Gusts: Strong gusts of wind can create a ‘buffeting effect’ on cars, particularly on exposed routes. High-sided vehicles are more susceptible, but all drivers should exercise caution when passing lorries and be prepared for sudden changes in wind direction.
  5. Maintain Control: Keep both hands on the steering wheel and stay vigilant for unexpected changes in road conditions or the behaviour of other vehicles.
  6. Be Cautious in Rural Areas: Accessing motorways and major roads from rural areas may be more challenging during the storm. Watch out for fallen trees, branches, debris, and flooded roads. Only drive through water if you are certain it is safe to do so.
  7. Plan: Check weather and traffic updates before setting out on your journey. Stay informed about road closures and potential hazards.

Storm Isha poses a significant risk to road users, and the RAC advises drivers to prioritize safety and exercise caution while travelling. By following these recommendations and staying informed about weather and road conditions, drivers can reduce the risks associated with severe weather events like Storm Isha.
