Residents Urged to Keep Windows Closed as Waste Fire Burns in West Hougham, Dover

Firefighters are continuing to tackle a waste fire in West Hougham, near Dover, with residents urged to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke in the area.

The fire was first reported on the afternoon of Monday, 28 April 2025, with emergency services called to a waste land site. At the peak of the response, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) were deployed to the scene.

Fire crews have been working through the night to manage a controlled burn and maintain a watching brief to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Latest Update

As of 11:50pm on Monday evening, attendance at the scene was scaled down to two fire engines. However, the public is still being advised to keep all windows and doors closed until at least the morning due to lingering smoke in the area.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said:

Firefighters remain at the scene in West Hougham overnight. Please continue to keep windows and doors closed, and share this advice with loved ones who may not have access to the internet.

There have been no reports of injuries, and fire crews continue to monitor the situation closely.

Initial Response

When the incident was first reported, crews used personal protective equipment (PPE) including breathing apparatus, as well as high-pressure hose reel jets and main jets to tackle the flames.

Local roads remained open, but people travelling in and around West Hougham were urged to stay alert to changing smoke conditions.

Ongoing Precautions

Residents and businesses nearby are being asked to stay informed and heed official advice until the fire is fully extinguished and the area declared safe.

Those particularly sensitive to smoke, such as individuals with respiratory conditions, are urged to take extra precautions.
