A 31-year-old Vietnamese national, Dung Nguyen, has been sentenced to three years and seven months behind bars for modern slavery offences and running a large-scale cannabis factory.
Fraud and Fear: How Nguyen Operated
Between March and July 2024, Nguyen used fake documents to secure a tenancy on Manor Road, Rugby. Once inside, he recruited a man in his twenties to manage a sprawling cannabis farm set up at the property.
Nguyen kept the victim under tight control using violence and threats to his family. The victim lived in fear for months until he bravely sought help from the public, which led to a police investigation.
Raid and Arrest Across Four Counties
Following the tip-off, police launched a complex probe and arrested Nguyen in Derbyshire on 9 April after executing a warrant at his home. Authorities simultaneously raided properties in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, West Yorkshire, and #Chesterfield, seizing various drugs and evidence of document fraud.
Justice Served and Deportation Ordered
Nguyen pleaded guilty to holding a person in slavery, cannabis production, and fraud by false representation. On Thursday 9 October at Warwick Crown Court, he was sentenced to over three years in prison. He will also face deportation after serving his sentence.
