Mark Campbell, an unemployed 37-year-old man, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years for the murder of Jane Fitzpatrick, 48, in the Cable Road area of Glenrothes, Fife, on 9 August 2021. The High Court in Edinburgh also found him guilty of 13 other offences against women, including rape, assault, and domestic abuse, which took place in the Fife area between 2003 and 2021.
Judge Lady Poole presiding over the case described Campbell as a violent abuser who had inflicted horrific harm on his victims. The court heard how Ms. Fitzpatrick, a grandmother, had endured control, threats, and abuse during her relationship with Campbell. The fatal attack occurred just hours after Campbell convinced her to leave the hospital following a head injury. They later went to a secluded yard in Glenrothes, where Campbell attempted to acquire drugs.
After the fatal assault, Campbell attempted to conceal the evidence by driving away with Ms Fitzpatrick’s body. She was discovered dead in his car the next morning, with numerous injuries to her body, head, and face. Bloodstains covered the car, and blood was found on the wall of a nearby garage. Despite Campbell’s attempts to shift blame, the jury rejected his defence, leading to his conviction.
Judge Lady Poole emphasized society’s stance on domestic abuse against women, stating, “You hit, headbutted, strangled, kicked, and spat on women.” She highlighted the severity of Campbell’s actions, resulting in severe injuries to some victims, with lasting impacts on others.
During the trial, it was revealed that Campbell had a criminal record dating back to his teenage years. He faced struggles with alcohol and illicit substances, and his upbringing was described as troubled.
David Green, Scotland’s procurator fiscal for homicide, condemned Campbell’s contemptible behaviour towards women, particularly noting the control he exerted over Jane Fitzpatrick’s life, which ultimately led to her tragic death. Green commended the bravery of the women who came forward to testify against Campbell, as their testimonies played a crucial role in securing his conviction.
Jane Fitzpatrick’s family and friends are left to cope with the devastating loss, while thoughts are with those women who bravely spoke out against Campbell and endured his abuse. Campbell’s sentence serves as a significant step towards justice for the victims and their loved ones, sending a strong message against domestic violence in Scotland.
