A devastating fire has destroyed much of the VHP Hindu Centre on Cleveland Road after flames tore through the single-storey building on Friday night (30 August).

Emergency Response

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it received around 14 calls reporting the fire shortly after 8pm. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Ilford, Barking, Stratford, Leyton, Hainault and Romford stations rushed to the scene.

A 32-metre turntable ladder from Dagenham Fire Station was also deployed and used as a water tower to tackle the blaze from above.

The fire was brought under control by 9.21pm, but the centre has suffered significant damage.

No Injuries Reported

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.

Local Disruption

Redbridge Council warned of major disruption in the area, with road closures affecting Ilford Lane and most routes between there and Sunnyside Road.

Residents were also advised to keep doors and windows closed due to heavy smoke.

LFB Statement

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“The Brigade received around 14 calls about the fire and Control Officers mobilised six fire engines and around 40 firefighters to the scene.

A 32-metre turntable ladder from Dagenham Fire Station also attended and was used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above.”

Investigation

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Fire investigators are expected to examine the scene to establish how the blaze started.
