Hundreds of protesters clashed with authorities across the UK last night, targeting Brighton station in a fierce demonstration against Israel’s crackdown on activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Brighton Station Chaos as Demonstrators Block Traffic
Over 200 protesters flooded Brighton station on Thursday evening, seizing control of the concourse before marching into the city centre. They then brought traffic to a standstill at one of the busiest junctions. Similar scenes unfolded at train stations nationwide.
The protests erupted after Israeli forces detained members of the Global Sumud Flotilla in the early hours of Thursday. The flotilla, which aimed to break the Gaza blockade, has sparked outrage among solidarity groups in Britain.
The Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign kept supporters updated, tweeting: “Hundreds now blocking the busiest junction in Brighton city centre. We are with you!”
Police Issue Stark Warning to Railway Protesters
In response, British Transport Police (BTP) issued a nationwide warning to stop targeting railway infrastructure. Assistant Chief Constable Sean O’Callaghan warned:
“This is a direct appeal to anyone considering protesting on the railway network this evening – I urge you to think again. The railway is an incredibly dangerous environment and stepping onto tracks could very easily result in serious injury or death. Everyone has the right to protest, but trespassing on the railway is a criminal offence, and those responsible can expect to be arrested.”
BTP confirmed they have boosted patrols at key stations and are working with Network Rail to keep the rail network running smoothly.
Global Sumud Flotilla Sparks Wave of Solidarity Protests
The Global Sumud Flotilla’s attempt to break the Gaza blockade has captured international attention. Its detention has ignited protests from solidarity groups across the UK and beyond, showing no signs of slowing down.
