The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United Nations, James Kariuki, delivered a powerful statement about Iran’s nuclear capabilities during a critical UN Security Council meeting.
Ambassador Kariuki highlighted several alarming developments in Iran’s nuclear program. He stressed that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium has already exceeded Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) limits by 32 times.
The diplomat revealed that on 6 December, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported Iran had significantly increased its production of 60% high-enriched uranium. This production rate was approximately five times higher than the previous month’s levels.
Notably, Iran remains the only non-nuclear weapon state enriching uranium at such an extreme level. The ambassador stressed that there is no credible civilian justification for Iran’s current nuclear activities.
The IAEA can no longer guarantee that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. This revelation raises significant global non-proliferation concerns and represents a critical moment in international diplomacy.
Ambassador Kariuki presented Iran with a clear diplomatic choice. The country can either continue to escalate tensions or choose the path of diplomatic engagement. The United Kingdom and its E3 partners remain committed to finding a constructive diplomatic solution.
However, the ambassador also issued a stern warning. With the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 set to expire next October, the international community is reaching a critical juncture. The UK is prepared to take every diplomatic step to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The statement explicitly mentioned the possibility of triggering snapback mechanisms if necessary, demonstrating the seriousness of the international community’s stance.
