BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS M48 Severn Bridge Shuts Both Ways, Chaos on Motorways

A crucial UK motorway bridge used by 80,000 drivers every day has slammed shut due to a serious defect. The M48 Severn Bridge, linking England and Wales, closed at 1pm today for emergency repairs, forcing motorists onto lengthy diversions and sparking rush-hour mayhem.

Drivers Diverted Amid Storm Chaos

Traffic Wales confirmed the closure in both directions and urged drivers to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge instead. A spokesman said: “The M48 Severn Bridge is closed in both directions due to emergency works. Further updates will follow once it reopens. Drivers are being diverted via J22 Prince of Wales Bridge.”

This comes as Storm Claudia batters Wales, issuing four “danger to life” flood warnings and causing widespread travel disruption. Monmouthshire is hardest hit, with power outages and evacuations since 4 am. Emergency teams, including South Wales Fire and Rescue, police, ambulance services, and the coastguard, are tackling multiple rescue operations amid worsening conditions.

Rail and Road Services Also Hit Hard

Transport for Wales has already cancelled 53 trains today, with around 85 further services delayed or disrupted. On the roads, National Highways revealed the M48 closure stems from an urgent “infrastructure defect” that needs immediate repair.

The official statement reads: “The M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire is closed eastbound between J2 (Chepstow) and J1 (Aust) due to an infrastructure defect requiring immediate repair. Traffic is being diverted via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, which remains fully open. Please allow extra journey time, plan ahead, or consider delaying your travel.”

Flood Alerts and Travel Chaos to Continue

  • More than 50 flood alerts issued by Natural Resources Wales
  • Four severe flood warnings posing a significant risk to life
  • Numerous routes still blocked by fast-moving floodwater, debris, and damaged infrastructure
  • Emergency crews active across South Wales amid worsening weather
