A major grass fire broke out on Rammey Marsh in Enfield, prompting a significant emergency response from London Fire Brigade (LFB) as ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters battled the flames on Tuesday afternoon.
Crews were called to the scene at around 3pm , after the fire began spreading rapidly across parched grassland amid ongoing heatwave conditions with thick smoke drifting over the M25 between junctions 25 and 26, leading to warnings for drivers in the area.
A drone team has also been deployed to help crews assess the extent of the fire and direct firefighting efforts in difficult terrain.
LFB Issues Barbecue and Cigarette Warning
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned:
“This summer has seen an unprecedented long dry spell with high temperatures, so the grass in London is tinder-box dry and the smallest of sparks can start a blaze which could cause devastation.”
Despite ongoing warnings, LFB said people continue to use barbecues in parks, drop cigarettes from car windows, and leave rubbish in dry grassland areas—actions that can easily spark wildfires in the current climate.
No injuries have been reported in the Rammey Marsh incident.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Residents and visitors are urged to:
- Avoid using barbecues in open spaces or balconies
- Dispose of cigarettes properly
- Take rubbish home or use designated bins
With UK heatwaves continuing, authorities are on high alert for further wildfires, particularly in dry and grassy areas.
